Barajas
Premium agave wine — the top-shelf pour for real margaritas.
Barajas is Specialty Blends’ flagship: a 100% blue agave wine crafted to pour like a top-shelf margarita. Build a top-shelf margarita program on the beer & wine license you already hold — real agave character, real strength, no liquor license required. Our customers say it best: it doesn’t taste like wine, it tastes like the real deal.
What is agave wine?
Agave wine begins exactly where tequila does — with the heart of the agave plant, whose sweet nectar has been fermented in Mexico for centuries. The difference is what happens next. Tequila goes on to be distilled; agave wine never sees a still. It’s fermented the way a fine wine is, keeping the earthy, gently sweet agave character that makes a margarita taste like a margarita — while remaining, in the eyes of the law, a wine.
That legal detail is the whole point for a bar or restaurant. Because agave wine is classified as wine, any business holding a beer & wine license can serve it. The margarita that used to require a liquor license now pours on the permit you already have.
Agave wine vs. tequila
Side by side, tequila runs hotter and drier; agave wine is a touch softer and rounder, at a lower proof than a distilled spirit. In a shaken or frozen margarita, your guests taste agave, lime, and salt — not the missing still. Barajas is crafted from 100% agave wine imported from Mexico — Specialty Blends was the first winery in the country to import it — and it’s built to pour like a premium margarita.

Agave taste your guests won’t question
Agave wine delivers what a margarita menu actually needs: genuine agave flavor, cocktail strength, and pour-after-pour consistency with no bartender skill required. Barajas is the bottle Texas businesses reach for when the margarita is the house drink — from single-location restaurants to the state’s biggest concessions.

The details
Agave wine, answered
What is agave wine?
Agave wine is made from the same plant tequila starts with — the Weber Blue agave. The nectar is fermented rather than distilled, so it keeps the earthy, gently sweet agave character while remaining, legally, a wine.
Is agave wine the same as tequila?
No. Both begin with agave, but tequila is distilled and agave wine never sees a still. Because it’s fermented, it’s classified as vinous — a wine — not a spirit.
Can I serve margaritas with only a beer & wine license?
Yes. Because agave wine is classified as wine, a business holding a beer & wine license can serve it — the margarita that used to require a liquor license pours on the permit you already have. Specific rules vary by state; ask us about yours.
What ABV is Barajas?
Barajas is available in 17% and 24% alcohol by volume. Our products are made to the highest ABV legally allowed in each state, so which one you receive depends on where you operate.
How much Barajas do I use in place of tequila?
Double the pour. If a recipe calls for 1 oz of tequila, use 2 oz of Barajas and reduce the water or mixer to keep the same strength and balance in the finished drink.
What does a Barajas margarita taste like?
Agave, lime and salt — the flavors people actually associate with a margarita. Side by side, tequila runs hotter and drier; Barajas is a touch softer and rounder at a lower proof. In a shaken or frozen margarita, guests taste the agave, not the missing still.
